After helping with the immediate relief work in the Tsunami affected area of the Nagai District,
TCT undertook to provide drinking water in the villages, which faced extreme drinking water shortage after
the Tsunami in Dec 2004.
TCT implemented the project in partnership with Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd, Theosophical Order of Service (TOS) and Grundfos Pumps who volunteered to be part of the project
- Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plants were installed in the villages of Akkaraipettai, Kuttinandiyur, Chandrapadi, Nagore Pattinacherry and Nambiyar Nagar
- Water committees were formed and local girls were selected and trained to operate the Plants
- About 2,000 households benefit from this project
- TCT organized a widespread campaign on ‘Safe drinking water’ in these communities to educate the people
- TCT drew up a Memorandum Of Understanding with the village Panchayats and the District Administration that it would limit its role to technical support, and transfer management to local communities.
- The project has been handed over to the District Apex Water Committee under the supervision of the District Collector.
