Women's Development

TCT initiated the Women’s Development programme in 1994.
By organizing poor village women into Self Help Groups for Savings and Credit activities, and training them, TCT made rural women’s empowerment a reality. TCT has been a forerunner in the Self-help and Micro-credit programmes in Vellore District.
What started with about 160 women in 13 groups steadily grew in six blocks of Vellore District. The Commercial Banks recognized the business in the Self Help Groups and provided credit to them directly.
This project has been very satisfying as it had tremendous impact on the women, their families and villages. This project was implemented for over 13 years, encouraging self-reliance among women.
As the project evolved, federation of Self Help Groups were formed by the women that further facilitated collective action, common programmes and more training for women for self management.
This project was also transferred to The Surabi Trust for easy administration.
